| "Sunset On The Olympic Peninsula"
"The setting of this print is reminiscent
of "Second Beach" on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. On a rare,
sunny summer afternoon, the sky is heavy with atmosphere, and a few streamers
of clouds remain to catch the glow of the setting sun. A familiar monolith
looms dark against the vivid sky. As you watch, the sun drops closer toward
the horizon. You memorize the colors; sounds; even the smells of this perfect
sunset on the Washington Coast."
ARTIST COMMENT This oil painting on stretched canvas is James Island on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State's northern coast. I had been studying the ocean sunsets, and this particular day provided me with a rare glimpse of the absolutely breathtaking colors that can sometimes occur as the sun sets beyond the sea. I did not have my camera available, so I made sketches with color notes in my drawing book. Later in my studio, I tried to recall all the vivid purples, reds and golds that had been dazzingly displayed before me. Mostly, I remembered the awesome effect of the sunlight shining at the edge of the looming volcanic "haystack" type rock, with the appearance of setting the very stone itself on fire.
