| "Storm Warnings"
"The sky is leaden and threatening to rain.
Already the sea is 'kicking' up and sending waves crashing against high
rocky cliffs. A lighthouse stands solid and serene above the tumult; a
symbol of calm against ominous 'Storm Warnings'."
ARTIST COMMENT I love the lighthouses. I have visited personally most of these sentinels of the Pacific Northwest. My desire is to see them for myself, so I can get a sense of their isolation, and the singular role they played in the safety and rescue of sailing vessels of old, as well as the guidance of modern craft. The ones I have painted are the ones I have been to. This scene, painted in oil on stretched canvas, is reminiscent of the lighthouse at Yaquina Head on the Pacific coast at Newport, Oregon. The weather is windy and rainy and the sea is very rough. Waves are crashing on the distant headland nearly halfway up the cliff. The title is meant to convey the role of the lighthouse to give warning to ships at sea of the existence of the dangerous, rocky coastline.
