"Stack Rock"

"The Pacific Northwest Coast has many large rock formations just off shore. This scene is of one such 'Stack Rock', at sunset on a beautiful, perfect, autumn day. Seagulls whirl around the rock as they begin to settle for their night's rest."

ARTIST COMMENT
Ocean sunsets can be fantastically beautiful.  As the sun sinks down on the horizon, the sky becomes aglow with the vibrant yellows and oranges that reflect upon the surface of a calming sea. Having studied the sea at all times of day,  I could successfully recreate the mood of the sea just at sunset.   The translucent top of the rolling breakers radiates the same golden light as the sun that shines through at a low angle.  This imposing stack rock is on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State.  I challenged myself to paint not only the shadows, but the reflections of the "elephant's foot" extension to the monolith.  The painting is a medium oil on stretched canvas.
