| "Rocky Shore"
"Standing on the edge of a 'rocky shore',
you watch surging waves crash against rugged rocks and recede to meet another
incoming breaker. The beauty of the frothy foam and emerald water
is unparalled!"
ARTIST COMMENT The coastline of the Pacific Northwest was formed by volcanic flows eons ago. The evidence of that is the rugged cliffs and numerous offshore rocks. In this oil on stretched canvas, I chose one such setting typical of Oregon and northern Washington. Here the evergreen trees grow close to the waters' edge, and looming rocks meet the constant onslaught of the sea. As incoming waves wrap around the unyielding stone, they are transformed into choppy swells that dissolve into foam. Rivulets of white trickle down the rocks to once again meet with the water, as the action repeats itself endlessly. My method of indicating the ruggedness of the rocks is to render them with palette knife showing the hard edges and abrupt angles that are nearly unaffected by the centuries of continued battering by the ocean waves.
