| "High Tide"
"A patch of blue sky shows promisingly through the torn mantle of heavy clouds, as gulls wheel above the turbulent 'high tide'. The sea still hurls itself angrily against the rocks; as though reluctant to give in to the pull of the deep. Rivulets of foamy water run off the rocks to rejoin the swell."
ARTIST COMMENT On the Oregon coast, at Cape Kiwanda, the on-rush of a high tide creates spectacular wave action. The steep cliffs descend far below the surface of the water, and as a result the swells crash with full force, sending the splash against the rocks, much like a bucket of water being sloshed out, but with many times the intensity. To indicate the circumstances that causes all of this action, I painted the sky and clouds in such a manner as to suggest strong winds. It is the wind which creates waves on the ocean. The deep blue of the foreground gives the feeling of cold and treacherous depths. I chose a square shaped stretched canvas for this oil to further "box in" the viewers and hold them captive to the turbulent elements.
