"Heavy Surf"

"A storm far out at sea has kicked up large waves that eventually reach shore.  With a mighty roar, they crash into offshore rocks, creating masses of foam in the 'heavy surf'."

ARTIST COMMENT
This oil painting on stretched canvas is of the area near Cape Arago on the Oregon coast.  Even on sunny summer days, the wind can whip up the surface of the sea, and send mighty waves crashing onto the rocks, nearly obscuring these monoliths in billowing foam.  I chose to indicate the force of the wind by the angle of clouds and by the multiple waves stretching to the horizon. The use of a palette knife for the rocks adds to the feeling of dense, formidable stone that seems to defy even the most powerful wave.  Yet, the appearance of so much floating foam, softens the scene and renders it almost peaceful.  You want to be there!
