"Haystack Rock At Dawn"

"The monolith known as Haystack Rock is a never ending source of inspiration for artists, photographers, writers and dreamers.  Here, at dawn, the rock dominates the accompanying smaller 'needles' of volcanic rock and reflects in an outgoing tide."

ARTIST COMMENT
Dawn is a magical time at the edge of the sea.  Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach, Oregon, adds to the magic.  In this small oil on stretched canvas, the sun has just risen enough to touch the clouds, yet the sea and rocks are still in shadow.  The brightness of the sky is a perfect foil to emphasize the stark silhouette of this looming monolith.  You will observe how I employed the angle of the clouds to "point" to the subject.  Your eye then travels down the left-hand side of the rock, to see the smaller "needles" that act as a balance to the large dark area.  Following on to the reflection in the wet surf,  you visually move to the small rock on the right, and back up alongside the right-hand side of Haystack Rock, to the expanse of blue and white sky.
