"Haystack & TRLBY Stack"

"When you hear the word 'haystack', you may envision large offshore rock formations, the most notable of them Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach, Oregon.  When someone says 'TRLBY stack', a picture of bright colorful diamond-shaped kites comes to mind.  Put the two images together and you have a not-to-be-forgotten memory of a day on the coast."

ARTIST COMMENT
When my family discovered Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach, Oregon, we also discovered (simultaneously) the joy of flying Trlby kites.  We bought one and learned how to launch and control a two line kite.  Soon we had purchased two more and were taught how to join them in tandem to make spectacular circles and swoops in the sky.  I don't recall which wore out first, me or the boys, but the painting expresses the fun we had.  This small watercolor on Arches 140# hot-pressed watercolor paper, is a result of the memory of that day.  The sky was brightly overcast to show off the vivid colors of the "new" kites.  Only the massive mound of rock seems to keep one from floating off into the kingdom of childhood on the tails of the kites.
