| "Haystack Rock In Spring"
"What a wonderful time of year to visit
the Northwest coast of Oregon, U.S.A. The weather is warming, days
are lengthening, and school is out for a family vacation to the seashore
during spring break."
ARTIST COMMENT In my series of watercolor paintings of Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach, Oregon, I have portrayed the rock at different times of the day, in different types of weather and each of the four seasons. When the tide is out, you can walk to it and climb on it. But be warned, the tide turns quickly and has stranded many an adventurer to be rescued, sometimes hours later; cold, weary, and embarassed. This scene on 140# Arches hot-pressed watercolor paper is looking southwest toward that famous massive rock just offshore. I chose a lovely Spring day, with soft clouds against a deep blue sky, and the brown volcanic rock crowned with new green. In a "Z" composition, both the angle of the sandy beach and the streak of blue sky, lead your eye to the center of interest, the rock.
