| "Haystack And Seagulls"
"A group of seagulls has gathered on the beach at Haystack Rock near Cannon Beach, Oregon. More gulls circle in the sea air and soon will join the others searching the rich tidal areas for a tender morsel. People strolling seem insignificant in the distance; dwarfed by the looming Haystack Rock."
ARTIST COMMENT At the beginning of my painting career, I painted mostly seagulls. Flying. Sitting. Wings wide, wings up. Soon, I realized that the ocean where I saw them the most, was as integral a part of the setting as they were. I learned to paint seascapes. When I began a series of watercolors of Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach, Oregon, I wanted to include these marvelous birds in the scene. This watercolor painting on 140# Arches hot-pressed watercolor paper, incorporates the seagulls into the scene. They are very much part of the composition, to keep the line of action weaving throughout the piece, and to break up the large expanse of sky. They also add scale to the large rock to "push" it into the distance. To learn more about the artist "painting the sea", please click here.
