"Haystack Rock"

"'Haystack Rock' is a dominant landmark on the coast of Oregon at Cannon Beach.  Here is shown a view from highway 101 looking north.  The mood is quiet and very peaceful on the ocean today."

ARTIST COMMENT
This small watercolor was painted on 140# hot-pressed top quality paper.  It is another in a series of watercolor paintings of Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach.  I visit here frequently to research the area.  This scene is from a wayside turn-off along the highway, south of the city.  I chose a "C" type composition and created a feeling of distance by focusing on the wind-blown trees on the left hand side.  The large looming rock appears quite a distance away, and the headland was muted to show the farthest distance of all.  The day is bright and overcast, with dark clouds hovering on the horizon.
