| "Cannon Beach Sunset"
"On Oregon's northern coast is a looming
'haystack' rock that dominates the scene for many miles. It is magnificent
at any time of day, but up close at a 'Cannon Beach sunset' it is a moment
to take your breath away."
ARTIST COMMENT Sunsets on Oregon's coast at Cannon Beach, are breathtakingly colorful on occasion, under perfect conditions. This small watercolor on 140# Arches watercolor paper, was painted from my memory of one of those days spent at Haystack Rock. As the sun set, the sky seemed to glow brighter and more vivid with each passing minute. The luminous colors stayed in my memory and later, in my studio, I created this scene. The immensity of the looming island is exemplified by the size of the figures on the wet sand. Though the rock is very massive, the expanse of sky seems almost to dwarf the volcanic monolith as the clouds fill the great void around it over the sea.
