| "Sunset At Haystack Rock"
"A rare and magnificent sight is captured here as the sun sets behind Haystack Rock on the Oregon Coast at Cannon Beach. A veritable rainbow of colors lights up the sky, silhouetting Haystack Rock and causing beach walkers to pause and ponder the awesome beauty of the sunset."
ARTIST COMMENT This is the first in my sunset series of watercolor paintings of the Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach, Oregon. It is on 140# hot-pressed Arches watercolor paper. I am in tremendous awe of this huge and looming monolith, that was created by volcanic flows eons ago. I am also intrigued by the wonderful sunsets that seem to be prevelant here, especially in March and October. Watercolor seems to be the perfect medium to capture the elusive softness of rapidly dissipating clouds. I can obtain rich, deep, dark tones by layering the paint in the areas where I want to create drama. Though only a small painting, there is a remarkable amount of detail as you take a closer look.
