| "Bird Rocks"
"It is an overcast, misty day on the Pacific Northwest Coast. As the sea sends its breakers relentlessly to shore, sea birds wait on the rocks, satiated with an abundant harvest of seafood garnered on the incoming tide. Soon the tide will change, and the cycle begins again; the cormorants will feed and then rest on the 'Bird Rocks'."
ARTIST COMMENT I am always visiting out-of-the-way locations to get research material for new oil paintings. This scene was one of those unforgettable experiences. My family had taken a trip to the Olympic Peninsula for a fishing trip with friends. It was there I first observed the cormorants on the black volcanic rocks. I painted this oil on canvas as soon as we returned home. This painting went so smoothly, I always say it "almost painted itself". I love the way the water sweeps around the foreground rock and appears to be still moving. I chose to paint the birds and rocks as a silhouette against the misty blue-grey water and sky.
