| "Battle Rock"
"A large looming offshore island known as 'Battle Rock' greets visitors to Port Orford, Oregon. There is a long history behind the name that belies the quiet beauty of the evergreen-shrouded rock."
ARTIST COMMENT Battle Rock is the predominant feature on the Pacific coastline at Port Orford, Oregon. (You can read about its past history by entering keywords: battle rock port orford, in your favorite search engine.) It was a natural subject for me to paint. When the tide is low, the rock is accessible to hardy hikers. On a sunny day in the summer, the sky is intensely blue, which reflects on the surface of the sea. In this medium sized oil on stretched canvas, I endeavored to capture the wamth of that kind of day. I used strong values to emphasize the stalwart character of the rock. The center of interest is the path at the top of the rock, where it meets the dark trees. The intent was to play up the historical aspect of this (infamous) site.
