"Harbor Gulls" by Carol Thompson

Harbor Gulls

"As the sunset casts brilliant colors over the peaceful water, Mt. Rainier, as seen from Gig Harbor, Washington, serves as a setting for a trio of 'Harbor Gulls' skimming the water and jostling each other for a place to rest.”

Artist comment:  "Seagulls have long been a subject for my oil paintings.  When I lived in Olympia, Washington, I had many occasions to observe Mount Rainier, from rising to setting of the sun, from Seattle to Centralia.  On evening as I passed through Gig Harbor, I was awestruck by the colors of the closing of the day.  The next day in my studio, I sketched the scene on canvas and painted it with oil beginning with the blues, pinks, and deep green of trees reflected in the quiet water.  Then I rendered the pilings (a warm compliment to the cool background).  Finally I painted the three seagulls in a triangle configuration, balancing the composition."
