| "Santa Cruz Lighthouse"
"The original lighthouse beamed a fifth
order Fresnel lens over Monterey Bay for the first time on December 31,
1869. The station was upgraded in 1908 with a modern lens of the fourth
order. The original building was razed in 1948, but an automated light
nearby served for the next 20 years. A replica brick building now stands
on the site, a memorial to Mark Abbott who lost his life surfing near the
shore."
