| "Hollyhocks"
"The deep maroon 'hollyhocks' that grow in my garden create an elegant backdrop for the dainty and more frivolous flowers. Upon occasion they seem to appear almost black. Who wouldn't welcome these tall beauties to their yard?"
ARTIST'S COMMENTS "Did your grandmother have hollyhocks in her garden? Your mother? Do you have hollyhocks gracing your yard, with tall glamorous spires reaching toward the billowy summer clouds? Do you have traditional colors; pink, yellow, red? Did you know that now hollyhocks come in duo-tones, even black? I planted hollyhocks in my garden as soon as I could claim a place for them. They greet visitors at the edge of the street. They are abuzz with bees. Butterflies dance with careless abandon in and out of the myriad of blooms. Entranced by the deep rich color of this recent hybrid, I researched and painted the hollyhocks. As usual, I chose Arches 180# hot-pressed watercolor paper. I carefully drew the composition, then began the background with a soft yellow wash. Each blossom was meticulously washed with layer after layer of color to capture the essence of the dark maroon flowers." To learn more about the artist "painting florals", please click

Carol Thompson's personal garden is the subject of this series of watercolor paintings entitled "Carol's Garden". These florals are inspired by the many hours of pleasure received from working the rich soil, nurturing the seedlings, and admiring the fragrant blossoms. Her garden is her getaway, a place to clear her mind; to daydream, a place to get in touch with nature, and a place to think, plan, and just relax. |
